A brief description of the painting process
Firstly a sketch is drawn of the subject , as shown at top right . The sketch establishes the tonal range and is a plan for the portrait. Any ideas or changes can be worked through during sketches. The portrait is then redrawn on canvas and under painting begun. Over a period of weeks many thin layers of paint are added until the portrait is complete.
